OHCA's Heroes of Long Term Care program honors individual employees for their service to residents, the facility, and to their community. Heroes are nominated from service and supports providers throughout Ohio. 

Newcomerstown Nurse Aide Named November 2019 “Hero”

The state’s largest organization representing long-term care facilities has honored a Newcomerstown, Ohio nurse aide as its November 2019 “Hero.”

Nancy Mathews, State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) at Riverside Manor, Newcomerstown, Ohio, has been selected by the Ohio Health Care Association (OHCA) as its Hero for November 2019. OHCA honors one long-term care employee each month for their service to care and providers, the individuals they serve, and the community.

Mathews will be featured on the OHCA website ( during the month of November, and she will be recognized at the Association’s 2020 Annual Convention in Columbus, Ohio.

Dwayne Shepherd, Licensed Nursing Home Administrator at Riverside Manor, says that Mathews is passionate about serving the facility’s residents and the community.

“When not up to her elbows in work, Nancy is out with the residents, talking to them, taking time to make them feel special,” said Shepherd. She has never let us down.”

Mathews has worked at Riverside Manor her entire career, as an STNA for 13 years on the floor and in the therapy department, and for the past 21 years in medical records and central supply.

“Nancy is a key employee for the facility and residents,” said K McAbier, Director of Nursing at Riverside Manor. “She does multiple jobs, is the first to arrive, and willing to stay as needed. She takes ownership in anything she does, and has the attitude of ‘not for self but for others.’”

In addition to her work at Riverside, Mathews is a full-time grandma, and has participated in boy scouts as well as school baseball and football activities. She has completed training in documentation and health privacy (HIPAA) as well as her nurse aide education.
