Urbana Nursing Assistant Named June, 2019 Long-Term Care “Hero”

The state’s largest organization representing long-term care facilities has honored an Urbana, Ohio long-term nursing assistant as its June 2019 “Hero of Long-Term Care.”

Mary Martin, Nursing Assistant and State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) at Vancrest of Urbana, has been selected by the Ohio Health Care Association (OHCA) as its Hero of Long-Term Care for June 2019. OHCA honors one long-term care employee each month for their service to long-term caregivers, residents and the community.

Martin will be featured on the OHCA website (www.ohca.org) during the month of June, and she will be recognized at the Association’s 2020 Annual Convention in Columbus, Ohio.

Wendy Rollins, Director of Nursing at Vancrest, says that Martin is passionate about serving the facility’s residents and the community.

With more than 16 years as an STNA at Vancrest, Mary is known to her peers as "Momma Mary," and inspires the team at the center.

"Mary's long and exemplary career in health care -- all at one facility -- demonstrates her dedication, determination, caring spirit and drive to build relationships and provide the best care possible," said Rollins. "While providing care, Mary is also training the next generation of caregivers and mentoring them through life lessons so they may learn and benefit from her own life experiences," she added.

Rollins says that Martin's understanding of residents' and families' needs make her a unique asset.

"Mary has established herself as an integral part of our healthcare team and embodies our mantra; if we make the choice to do the right thing on a daily basis, good things will happen," said Rollins.

Martin provides customer-focused service with a positive attitude, and works hard to ensure that her actions result in positive outcomes

Martin has devoted her life to her residents and STNA duties, and Rollins says that her most important contribution has been her ability to inspire and nurture past, present and future generations. "Her vast knowledge and experience, friendly face and welcoming smile make Mary our Hero of Long Term Care!"
