Cincinnati Nurse Named December 2017 Long-Term Care “Hero”

The state’s largest organization representing long-term care facilities has honored a Cincinnati Nurse as its November 2017 “Hero of Long-Term Care.”

Victoria Summerlin, RN, Nurse Supervisor at Brookwood Retirement Community, Cincinnati, has been selected by the Ohio Health Care Association (OHCA) as its Hero of Long-Term Care for December 2017. OHCA honors one long-term care employee each month for their service to long-term caregivers, residents and the community.

Summerlin will be featured on the OHCA website during the month of December, and will be recognized at the Association’s 2018 Annual Convention in Columbus, Ohio.

René Sharp, Executive Director at Brookwood, says that Summerlin is passionate about serving the facility’s residents and the community.

"Vicky has dedicated her life and career to serving seniors, and training others to serve them as she does," said Sharp. She knows every details about her residents, and interacts with the team to ensure they receive the services, medications, therapy and procedures to keep them in their home.

According to the staff at Brookwood, Summerlin has been an extraordinary asset.

She is the mother-hen when it comes to training our nurses," said Alisha Overbeck, RN, Director of Nursing at Brookwood.  "Our nurses value her teaching methods to ensure she is leaving the next generation well-prepared and knowledgeable for the years to come."

Summerlin has more than 40 years experience in long term care nursing, with the last 14 as RN Supervisor at Brookwood. Her depth of knowledge and years of experience have made her a true leader and respected colleague. Beside all these qualities, she has a great sense of humor. "Vicky keeps nurses, aides, residents, families and visitors laughing," said Sharp. "She can find humor in every situation, and she uses it to ease others and reduce their anxiety in a variety of ways."

Summerlin is known to the doctors visiting Brookwood, and they ask for her to make rounds with them. She also keeps up with family members, knowing each one and how best to communicate, whether by email, through a nightly call or weekly updates.

Summerlin is retiring in December 2017, and her leadership will be missed.

“We are grateful for the years Vicki has spent at Brookwood,” said Sharp. She has been such an asset and has countless impact on all who enter our doors . . . she will be sorely missed; Vicky Summerlin is truly our Hero of Long Term Care!”
