Using the Video

A Time of Transition can be used in one of two ways. Nursing facilities can either show this video to new family members upon admission, or give it to them to take home and watch. Regardless of the way it is used, it is important to set the right tone with family members as to why you are showing this video. It is equally important to spend some time following the family’s viewing of this video to discuss what they saw.

Begin your discussion by reminding families that even though most residents find happiness and security with nursing home life, every resident’s transition to a nursing home is different. Also let families know that even though they may feel comfortable and relieved at that time about placing their loved one in your care, feelings of guilt, resentment, even frustration are normal from time-to-time. This video will help explain those issues and will reinforce the fact that the best way for families to deal with those feelings is to maintain an open, on-going dialogue with staff.
