Heroes of Long Term Care

OHCA's Heroes of Long Term Care program honors individual long-term care employees for their service to residents, the facility, and to their community. Heroes are nominated from long-term care facilities throughout Ohio.

Steubenville Cook Named October, 2018 Long-Term Care “Hero”

The state’s largest organization representing long-term care facilities has honored a Steubenville, Ohio cook as its October 2018 “Hero of Long-Term Care.”

Mary Lou Gray, cook at Carriage House Assisted Living in Steubenville, has been selected by the Ohio Health Care Association (OHCA) as its Hero of Long-Term Care for October 2018. OHCA honors one long-term care employee each month for their service to long-term caregivers, residents and the community.

Gray will be featured on the OHCA website (www.ohca.org) during the month of October, and will be recognized at the Association’s 2019 Annual Convention in Columbus, Ohio.

Andrea Taylor, Administrator at Carriage House, says that Gray is passionate about serving the facility’s residents and the community.

"Mary Lou is passionate about providing meals that meet our residents' preferences," said Taylor. "She even cooks special items for just 1 or 2 people if they request," she added.

Gray has worked in housekeeping, laundry and dietary departments for long term care facilities since 1979. She is a licensed phlebotomist, and is Medical Laboratory Technician certified; in prior years she has worked as a Red Cross CPR instructor.

"Mary Lou was the winner of our company's Values at Work program, for demonstrating our value of leadership," said Taylor. She demonstrates leadership by taking pride in the cleanliness of her kitchen, and is a team player who assist with food preparation for her co-workers in the larger kitchen that services our skilled nursing facility."

Her co-workers respect her and her dedication led to her nomination for this honor. “We are proud to call her our Hero of Long Term Care!” said Taylor.
