Communicating With Residents With Dementia And Their Families

Level: Advanced

This session is an exploration of communication challenges faced by all care and interdisciplinary staff in the person-centered care management of challenging residents. Dr. Ratnaparkhi will share strategies to improve rapport with residents and their families. In addition, self-reflection exercises in aging will be presented, anchored by the introduction of case studies. Communication guidelines and strategies including verbal and non-verbal approaches, will be discussed, assuming prior knowledge in this area. Examples of challenging communication situations will be explored and strategies for improving person-centered communication approaches will be presented. Input from the participants will be encouraged with some dialogue and exchange for devising solutions.

This session helps participants from all disciplines think and learn about improving communication skills with a person-centered and person-directed approach with residents and families.
