The state’s largest organization representing long-term care facilities has honored a Bolivar, Ohio Dining Room Manager as its February 2010 “Hero of Long-Term Care.”
Abby Strubel, Dining Room Manager at Hennis Care Centre of Bolivar, was selected by the Ohio Health Care Association (OHCA) as its Hero of Long-Term Care for the month of February, 2010. The organization chooses one long-term care employee each month to honor for their service to the long-term care facility, its residents and the community.
Strubel will be featured on the Association’s website in February, and will be honored at the Association’s 2010 Annual Convention in Columbus.
Kim Zontini, Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, said that Strubel is passionate about serving the residents in the facility. “If all potential caregivers could emulate the compassion, caring and gentle ways of Abby, a brighter light would shine!” said Zontini.
Strubel has worked for Hennis Care Centre since 2002, and has worked as a State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) and dining room hostess. She was promoted to dining room manager since November 2005. Strubel is now enrolled in the Dietary Manager Independent Study Program through the University of Florida to earn her certification.
“Abby’s ability to adapt to any situation and fill in where needed has made her invaluable to Hennis Care Centre,” said Jenny Miller, Human Resource Director. “Because she is also an STNA, she is able to deal effectively with residents and assist if a problem or emergency arises. Abby wears many different hats in her daily interactions with residents and staff . . . and she does it all with a smile on her face!”
In addition to her duties at Hennis Care Centre, Strubel is active in the community, participating in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and entertaining residents and at fairs and festivals as a member of the Kickin’ Outlaws dance group. She also volunteers to serve breakfast to the all-night walkers participating in the fundraiser.
Miller says that Strubel has grown into a mentor and leader for her fellow employees, and is always willing to work through a problem with someone, even if only to provide a shoulder to lean on. “She has gained the respect and admiration of her co-workers for her demeanor, dedication and work ethic,” says Miller. “We feel that Abby is not just an asset to our facility, but to the career choice of long-term caregivers.”
Strubel also gives of her time by accompanying and assisting residents while they enjoy activities outside of the centre. She has helped residents to visit residents, experience a boat ride, explore the county fair and to search for bargains on shopping excursions. “She always has a smile on her face, and makes each outing special for the residents, Miller said. “Abby deserves to be honored because she is a long-term care hero!”
