Situation Still Unclear On Health Care Reform
AHCA reports that there is information circulating that President Obama will release a new version of health care reform on Sunday, February 21. At press time there are no indications of what this version of health care reform will include, but AHCA and OHCA will be monitoring the information closely to determine the effect on the long term and post-acute care community. The White House has also called on Republican leadership to produce a comprehensive legislative proposal. The President has announced he will convene a bipartisan “summit” with Congressional leadership on February 25 to discuss health care reform options. There are two potential strategies being discussed on Capitol Hill relating to health care reform. The first, referred to as the “two bill strategy,” would involve the House passing the Senate bill and sending it to the President for his signature, while simultaneously passing a budget reconciliation bill. The reconciliation bill will amend the Senate-passed bill to make changes that the House and Senate negotiators have agreed to. There are significant political and procedural challenges involved in this strategy. The second strategy is referred to as the “small bill strategy.” This would involve a series of bills that address specific issues in the health care system where there is broad agreement that change is needed. Please watch OHCA communications for updates.
