Governor Strickland Stresses Education, Business, Energy in State of the State
In his 2010 State of the State Address, Governor Strickland outlined his solutions to address Ohio's immediate economic challenges, concentrating on initiatives funded with existing resources to create jobs, including re-allocating money for alternative energy, helping businesses secure financing and building a bio-refinery. He did not mention health care during the hour-long address. Blaming Ohio’s budget woes on a global recession and Wall Street greed, he said in his speech that state efforts such as freezing college tuition for two years and investing in alternative energy are laying the foundation for growth after the recession ends. Strickland's speech did not address the deficit of up to several billion dollars looming in the next state budget because of the reliance on federal stimulus dollars and other one-time money in the current budget. He also address offered an optimistic view of the state's economic future forged with new "green" jobs.
