West
Nile Virus Found in Franklin County Mosquitoes
According
to the Franklin County Board of Health, a second mosquito in Franklin County
has tested positive for West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus mosquitoes were found
in the city of Dublin, spurring the county to fog for mosquitoes in that
community beginning after those findings. Last week a pool of mosquitoes tested
positive for West Nile Virus in Prairie Township, located in western Franklin
County. OHCA reported on similar activity in Cuyahoga County in the July 1,
2008 OHCA Bulletin.
On the ODH website,
it is reported that as of July 22, 2008, there were 2,692 mosquito pools
(95,232 mosquitoes) tested and three pools were positive. There were also
10 horses and 27 birds tested for West Nile Virus and all were
negative. There have been no human cases reported so far this year. By comparison,
in 2007 there were 8,240 mosquito pools (252,195 mosquitoes) tested
and 325 pools were positive; 115 birds were tested and 22 were
positive, and of the 51 horses tested, two were positive.
There were 23 human cases in 2007, including three deaths. For
