ODH Releases New Regulatory Tracking Report

This week, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) issued its third in a series of quarterly tracking reports on survey citations and other data. This report covers the fourth quarter of 2011. In the fourth quarter, surveyors cited 1,196 deficiencies on 605 surveys of all types, or an average of just under two deficiencies per survey. On 178 standard or combined surveys, 849 deficiencies were cited (4.8 per survey). This rate compared to 5.1 in third quarter 2011 and is the same as fourth quarter 2010. Deficiencies cited at a G level or above declined from 74 in the third quarter to 46 in the fourth quarter, and six immediate jeopardy deficiencies were cited compared to 19 in the third quarter. In fourth quarter 2010, surveyors listed 41 G and above and 3 immediate jeopardy deficiencies. ODH’s report includes a number of other data items, such a selected quality measures, civil money penalties, specific types of deficiencies (e.g., staffing), capacity and occupancy, specialty units, and complaints and self-reported incidents. ODH reported that as of June 2011, average occupancy was the same as in 2010 (85%), with both total census and total beds declining slightly. Total complaints fell off about 10% in fourth quarter 2011, although they were significantly higher than fourth quarter 2010.
